Space laser communication refers to the communication between cosmic spaces and spaces including atmosphere space, low orbit, middle orbit, synchronous orbit and interplanetary space, which uses laser signal as the carrier of information. Due to the high level of temporal coherence and spatial orientation of laser itself, space laser communication has the advantages of large communication capacity, light weight, high transmission rate, low power consumption, small size, high security and so on. Developed countries such as Europe, America, Japan have been researching in it profoundly for years, especially in recent times, a large number of space laser communication systems start to experiment in space, which leads to significant progress of space laser communication technology.

In space laser communication, the capture of space laser communication terminals and the detection and verification of tracking and pointing performance (PAT) and communication performance are equally important with the design of space laser communication terminals, which attracts world wide attention.

The group of space laser communication of Institute of quantum electronics, College of information science and technology, Peking University devotes to the research of the performance of space laser communication terminals. The research directions of the group include the research on space optical communication experiment device and optical transmission simulation technology, fast acquisition technique for free space optical communication based on astronomical telescope, ground test on PAT performance of FSO terminals, ground test for the far field performance of FSO terminals and so on, which cover several directions with important scientific research significance and application value in this field. The laboratory did the first research in China which focuses on large diameter, fairly comprehensive principle and test scheme of the ground inspection and verification system, analysis of key parameters and total control subsystem.
